One of the big problems with mobile phones is the issue of not being able to keep them secure from any incoming communications from the networks at the point of capture.

Not having the mobile phone switched on means that critical time and date stamps cannot be verified, which means that the evidence captured can be questioned.

Benefits.

  1. Potentially avoids the problem of the mobile phone becoming PIN locked.
  2. Faraday Window ensures that the Phone Shield bag by Disklabs is the first faraday bag to allow the examiner to view the phone in a ‘faraday’ condition, thus enabling an ‘immediate preview of evidence’
  3. Re-useable
  4. Portable – The Phone-Shield Faraday Bag by Disklabs can be fit onto the utility belt of a beat officer, or pocketed for simple, light transportation.
  5. Negates the need for an expensive faraday cage
  6. When spread over the cost of several examinations, the Phone-Shield Faraday Bag will pay for itself in little or no time.
  7. To prevent the data from the networks communicating with the device, therefore stops any chance of evidence being tainted.
  8. Prevents any chance of evidence being manipulated during covert acquisition.
  9. Mobile Phone can still be turned on during flight, thus not losing any data.
  10. Inexpensive.

Approx Size of Phone-Shield Faraday Bag:

When Sealed: 180mm x 160mm

When Open: 230mm x 160mm

The bag is sealed simply by opening the conductive Hook and Loop at the top of the bag, dropping the phone intothe bag, then folding the sealed top over twice, sealing the bag again with more conductive Hook and Loop.

Specially designed plastic coated material is used to provide the main component of the bag, (made with Silver, Nickel and Copper), then a conductive mesh is used to ensure that there is visibility into the Phone Shield Faraday Bag by Disklabs. The stitching is conductive, the materials are conductive, as is the Hook and Loop.

Testing

Tests carried out in isolation with Rohde & Schwarz FSH3 spectrum analyzer to ascertain attenuation of new RF screening bag presented for testing 19th September 2007. Tests carried out on the morning of Thursday 20th of September 2007.

Tests were carried out with calibrated aerials and bag attenuation was ascertained at 900, 1800 and 2100MHz. Attenuation through the material was found to be 19dB at 900MHz, and approximately 30dB at 1800 and 2100MHz. 17dB attenuation through the bag appears to be sufficient to inhibit a network connection.

Simple on air tests were conducted with GSM900, GSM1800 and 3G phones by placing an already network registered phone into the bag and folding over the over end in the prescribed way (double folding the open end). A call was then made to the phone under test to establish if the phone would ring when called. In each test, the phone did not connect to the network, receive a call and ring whilst in the bag. A connection between the network and the handset could not be established.

Tests within an isolated environment (RF cage) were conducted at GSM900 and GSM 1800 frequencies with a Rohde & Schwarz CMD 55 test set. These additional tests also proved the bag to be effective at these frequencies, inhibiting test equipment from connecting to the handset.
